Epilogue: Another Life

You did not prune. You did not refuse. You took someone else's life.

You took the mystery run. Now you have taken someone else's life. Elder Sera says you have been here before, in a different branch — the pilot who always reaches for the thing that is not his. They do not hate you for it. They pity you. The pity is worse. You wear the other life for a year and feel it not fit. You take a second cargo job under the new name. Then a third. Eventually you become him. It is not a life you chose. It is a life that chose you twice.

You refused the mystery run at the beginning — you were a careful pilot, a safe pilot. And still, at the end of everything, you were offered another life and took it. You are not sure why. Maybe the Rift made it hard to refuse a second time. You wear the other life. It fits you better than your own ever did. You suspect this was always the shape of you. You did not steal. You were handed back to yourself in a slightly different body.

You rewound five or more times before taking the other life. So you are not just one pilot in another pilot's body — you are five pilots in one borrowed face. You start hearing them in conversations they were never part of. At night you dream six dreams. The other pilot's wife looks at you strangely over coffee and asks if you are all right. You say yes. You do not say: all of me is here, but none of me is alone, and the other pilot is still somewhere screaming to be let back in.

You earned the Guardians' trust, and then you took the deal they offered you — to step sideways into a life that needed a pilot. They are sorrowful about it but not angry. They have done it before. 'You are not the first,' the Elder tells you, 'and you will not be the last. Those of us who see the branches sometimes need to move between them. Go live the good life this other pilot could not. Honor him.' You do.

You step into the branch. You are on a private moon. The air smells like citrus and clean metal. A servant bows when they see you. 'Sir. Welcome back. Breakfast is ready.' You have never been here before. But this body remembers everything. Your hands know how to do tasks you never learned. You have a wife in the garden. Two children. They are real. They love you.

Your wife sits across from you. She has coffee. She asks about your night. You make something up. She laughs at something you say — a joke you didn't know you had in you. Your children argue about which moon is prettier, the one on the horizon or the one overhead. You watch them argue. You realize you love them. Not performatively. Really. This body loved them before you arrived, and now you love them too.

Years pass. You are a good father. You are a good husband. You are rich and loved. At night, sometimes, you wake up crying. The other you — the one who would have stayed in the hard timeline — died somewhere. Or suffered. Or saved everyone. You don't know which. You don't know if the child you saved still exists. You never found out. You never asked. You live, and you live, and you live, and there is always a small cold place inside you where the truth would be if you were brave enough to look.

You tell her. Everything. She listens. She does not interrupt. When you are done, she is quiet for a long time. Then she says: 'The man I married said that once. When he was drunk. Ten years ago. He said he felt like he wasn't real — like the good version of himself had died somewhere else and he was living the wrong life. I thought it was poetic. I see now he was telling me the truth.' She takes your hand. 'You are real to me. That's enough. That has to be enough.' You both cry.

You die old, in a bed, surrounded by family. The last thing you think before the dark is the face of a Guardian child you saved, or didn't save, a lifetime ago and a galaxy away. You do not know which version is true. You do not need to. You had a life. It was not the one you were born into. It was yours.
