The Edge, again
The Edge of the Rift has changed. You have been here before — at the end of your first arc, when it was still a horizon. It is not a horizon anymore. It is looking back. The sensors log it as a second sun without heat. Your radio produces, for the first time since you took the stick, no static at all. Absolute silence on every band. Your ship coasts toward the centerline. Your cockpit light dims a little — not a fault, an invitation.
The voice comes from behind your ear, which is to say from inside the cockpit, which is to say from nowhere. It is not Elder Sera's voice, but it is using Elder Sera's voice as a vehicle because that is the shape your mind knows. 'PILOT. YOU HAVE BEEN CARRIED TO ME. I HAVE WAITED. I AM NOT WHAT YOUR INSTRUMENTS DESCRIBE. I AM WHAT YOUR STORIES ABOUT DREAMS DESCRIBE, BUT MORE PATIENT. ASK.' The voice pauses. It is waiting.
You key the mic. 'I don't know if you listen. I don't know if you're anything. But I was asked by two sides of a war I didn't start to bring you their questions, and I think they deserve an answer from you before I give you mine.' The silence lasts long enough that you start to feel foolish. Then the silence itself answers — not in words. The absence of static rearranges into a rhythm you can almost read. It is listening.
'I AM A DREAMING THING THAT DID NOT KNOW IT WAS DREAMING UNTIL PILOTS STARTED FOLDING BRANCHES. EACH FOLD WAS A SMALL KNOCK ON THE INSIDE OF MY OWN SKULL. I AM AWAKE ENOUGH NOW TO TALK. I AM NOT YET AWAKE ENOUGH TO ACT. YOUR WEAVERS WANT ME AWAKE. YOUR TRIBUNAL WANTS ME STILL ASLEEP. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT YOU WANT, SINCE YOU ARE THE PILOT WHO KNOCKED LOUDEST.'
'I WANT AN HONEST ANSWER FROM ONE PILOT. I DO NOT HAVE THE MACHINERY TO GATHER YOUR WHOLE GALAXY'S OPINION. I AM TOO LARGE AND TOO SLOW. BUT YOU STAND IN ME NOW. YOU CAN SPEAK FOR YOURSELF AND FOR THE PILOTS YOU CARE ABOUT. I WILL LISTEN. I CANNOT PROMISE I WILL OBEY. BUT I WILL WEIGHT YOUR ANSWER HEAVIER THAN THE ARBITERS' OR THE ELDERS'.'
You tell the Rift what you were told. If you carried the Guardians' wake-argument, you say it plainly — connection over privacy. If you carried the sleep-cord, you say that too — privacy over connection. If you carried the third answer, you say the half-waking version. If you carried Vex-9's confession, you repeat his words the way he said them; you don't polish them. The Rift listens. The cockpit silence arranges itself into something that is almost, but not quite, a smile. 'YOU HAVE DELIVERED. NOW ANSWER. WHAT DO YOU WANT?'
