The galaxy you chose — awake or asleep or dreaming or shattered — is the galaxy you fly in, and you have stopped being surprised by it. Then, on an ordinary evening in an ordinary system, you get one last message. The sender is listed only as LOOM. The message is one line: 'WAS IT WHAT YOU WANTED?'
The reply comes instantly. 'GOOD. I AM RELIEVED. I DO NOT GET THIS ANSWER OFTEN. FLY WELL, PILOT. I WILL NOT CALL YOU AGAIN. IF YOU WANT ME, YOU KNOW WHERE I AM.' Your navcomputer highlights, briefly, the coordinates of the Edge of the Rift — the way a map highlights a place you have already been. Then the message disappears. The galaxy continues. You continue with it.
A pause that is longer than the Rift's usual pauses. Then: 'THAT IS AN HONEST ANSWER, AND I THANK YOU FOR IT. I CANNOT UNDO WHAT WE CHOSE TOGETHER. I CAN OFFER ONE SMALL KINDNESS. IF YOU WOULD REWIND THIS CONVERSATION, I WILL REMEMBER AND YOU WILL NOT. YOU MAY CHOOSE DIFFERENTLY. THE TRIBUNAL WILL NOT INTERFERE. ACCEPT?'
'THAT IS ALSO HONEST. I WILL NOT PRESS. FLY, PILOT. WHATEVER THE ANSWER RESOLVES TO, IT WILL RESOLVE IN ITS OWN TIME. I WILL NOT CALL AGAIN. BUT I WILL BE HERE IF YOU DO.' The message dissolves the way fog dissolves when sun comes up. Your cockpit smells, very faintly, of river water. You have no idea why.
