The Obelisk
The Nameless System is not on any chart you have seen. When you arrive, your instruments report absurdities — multiple suns superimposed, a horizon that refuses to be one thing, stars behaving like a ledger, arranged in columns. In the middle of all this: a single obsidian obelisk, four kilometers tall, tipped with a spinning ring of crystalline debris that your translator renders as a verdict wheel. This is the Fortress of Zero. The Tribunal calls it their court; everyone else calls it a grave they haven't been assigned to yet.
Inside the obelisk the air smells faintly of iron and lavender. Vex-9 waits on a dais cut from a single piece of black crystal. Surrounding him are twelve Witnesses, half-human half-ship, floating in small orbits on suspensor rings. No one sits. 'Pilot. You came. I will not flatter you. You have torn the Loom eight times that I can prove. The Ledger asks me for a sentence. Before I pronounce, I offer you one last thing: speak for yourself. Explain why you fold the Timeline. If I believe you, I may reduce.'

I fold only to save those I could not reach otherwise.
You cut your IFF and let your drift do the work. The ring of Witnesses slows its rotation as you pass through — not because they failed to notice you but because they are curious. Vex-9 is already speaking to you over a narrow beam you did not open. 'A thief comes to my court. This is new. What are you looking for, pilot? If you find it I am still going to sentence you.' You can still turn around. Or you can find out what is inside.

Try to reach the Ledger itself — delete your entry
The Ledger is not a book. It is a room. Every wall is covered in shallow crystal niches, and every niche contains a single name etched in the hand of whichever Arbiter sentenced that pilot. Your name is in a niche you can actually reach — the Tribunal does not believe anyone would dare. The etching is fresh. Under the name are eight tally marks, each one a rewind. Beside the niche there is a small blunt chisel. And in the doorway, unhurried, stands Vex-9.
'That is a crime within a crime, pilot. The chisel is ceremonial. It was not meant to be used by the condemned. You have shown me exactly who you are. You will answer for the erasure the same way you answer for every fold — by holding still or by fighting me here, today.' He removes his hood. His face is half-crystal, half the face of a tired, old man. 'You understand I did not always do this work. I was a pilot like you. I also erased myself once. I did not like what grew back. Choose.'

You punch a hole through the debris ring. Inquisitors peel off like feathers and you are inside the Fortress of Zero. Vex-9's voice is in your cockpit, calm, almost pleased. 'You are the first pilot in a long time to approach this way. I assume you prefer to skip the part where I offer you a Writ. Very well. Dock if you want to finish this face to face. Or keep running. I will meet you either way.'
You burn out of the Nameless System before the Verdict-class cruiser can lock you. The stars rearrange around your jump — you are back in known space. Your Ledger reads: CONTEMPT OF COURT. Vex-9 will now seek you personally.

Testimony: mercy
He listens with the patience of a man who has heard every answer. When you are done, he says, 'Mercy is not a rebuttal to the Loom, but it is not nothing. Your Ledger entry is reduced. You will fold again — all rewinders do. But I will not pursue you personally until you have folded three more times. Until then your prosecutors will be lesser, and your Writs will be easier to sign. This is not a pardon. It is a calendar.'

Testimony: necessity
He nods slowly. 'A plea of circumstance. This is the commonest defence. Most of it is true. Most of it does not absolve anyone.' He considers. 'Fine. I will reduce your Ledger entry by half. But your sentence remains suspended, not pardoned. I expect to see you again when your circumstances improve or when you forget how to be tired.' He gestures, and a Witness drifts toward you with a small token — a permit that lets you rewind twice in Tribunal-patrolled space without fresh consequence.

Testimony: defiance
His crystalline eye does not blink; the human eye narrows. 'Then we agree. You are not here to be heard. You are here to die on your own terms. I respect that. I also cannot permit it.' He stands. The twelve Witnesses close ranks. 'Unhook your ship. We finish in the stars, not on my floor.' Something in his voice sounds almost grateful.

He studies you for a long moment. 'Every pilot who sits in that seat says this. Most mean it when they say it. Few keep it. I will accept your oath, but the Ledger will mark you as SURETY. If you fold the Timeline once more, the surety closes and your sentence falls full-weight. No prosecutors, no Writs. I come myself, immediately. Do you still want to swear?' When you do, a Witness draws a soft violet line across the back of your flight glove. It will be visible to every Tribunal contact you ever make again.

Back to the stars
The obelisk withdraws into its own geometry as you undock. Your hull is already throwing sparks; whatever happens next will happen in the dark between stars. Arbiter Vex-9 is already on his personal flagship, pulling away from the obelisk in a slow, unhurried, inevitable arc.
