A request
A tired woman approaches you at the mission board. 'My sister flew the route to Keros-4 six weeks ago. She never came back. The authorities won't look — it's outside their jurisdiction. I have 15,000 credits. Find out what happened to her. Bring back any proof. Or her body. I'll take either.'

The missing pilot's last transmission came from a dead system in the Verge region — designated V-77, no planets, no traffic, not even a relay. You jump there. Her ship drifts, engine cold, hull breached. No bodies inside. But there are signs — claw marks on the interior, dried blood, and a single audio log in her captain's chair.
'This is Rena Voss, ship Vagrant, last transmission. I found something. A gate. Floating in open space, no anchor, no station around it. It's not a Rift event — it's older. I think — I'm going to try to — there's something calling from it. If anyone finds this, tell my sister I —' The log cuts off. In the background just before the cut, you hear something that is clearly not human.

No body. But there are four sealed crates in the cargo hold. Guardian-marked. The missing pilot was running contraband for the Guardians — something her sister clearly did not know. You crack one. Inside: a small device that hums at a frequency that makes your ears feel wrong. A pre-Rift artifact.

Two days of scanning. You find it. A ring of black stone, floating in deep space, three kilometers across. The space inside the ring is wrong — stars visible through it don't match the ones behind. Rena's final engine trail leads directly into the center. As you approach, your ship's radio fills with a voice. Rena's voice. 'Pilot. If you can hear me — turn back. I am not alone in here. And I am not entirely me anymore.'

Enter the gate

The inside is a corridor that should not physically fit in a ring of stone. You fly for an hour through hallways of black architecture. At the end — a figure. Floating. Not breathing. It is Rena, or what used to be Rena. Her eyes are closed. When you get close, they open. They are not her eyes anymore. Something else looks through them and speaks with her voice.

Try to bring her back
Combat begins; escape is disabled for this encounter.
Whatever was wearing her leaves. Rena opens her eyes — her real eyes — once, for three seconds. Long enough to whisper: 'Thank you.' Then she closes them for the last time. You bring her body home.

Return to the sister

You leave Rena to whatever she has become. The gate seals itself behind you as you exit. You return to the sister with nothing but a coordinates and a truth you can barely speak.
You return to the sister with the audio log and the location of her sister's drifting ship, but nothing more. It is not closure. It is at least something.
She meets you at the dock. You tell her what happened. She does not cry. She nods, once, and hands you the credits. 'Thank you for going where I couldn't. I needed to know she wasn't just out there somewhere, alone. You gave me that.'
Alternative dialogue for this scene
Variant 1
You tell her the truth. That you ended her sister. She is silent for a long time. Then she says: 'Thank you for telling me. Most pilots would have lied. Here is your money.' She does not look at you again.
Variant 2
You tell her what her sister became. She refuses the money. 'I paid you to bring her home. You didn't.' She walks away.

She listens to the log. She is quiet for a long time. 'Partial payment for partial answers.' She hands you 6,000 credits. 'If you ever go back and find out more, come find me. I can pay again.'
