Counterpoint

You walked away from the tree and every branch still plays inside you. Elder Sera, because they threaded you deeply, can hear the chord you make. Elders arrive on Verge Station without warning. They sit in a ring around your bunk while you sleep. They do not interfere — they listen. Apparently you sound like music to them. A symphony in seventeen voices singing mostly in tune. One elder weeps when she hears the part where you saved the child in three branches and died for her in one. You do not know you are beautiful. They will not tell you.

Too many rewinds

You walked away from the tree but the tree is noisier than it should be. Every time you rewound, a new branch started playing. You rewound too many times. The background hum of parallel lives has become a roar. You cannot hear your own voice over the chorus of selves. You book into a Guardian clinic. The healer listens for eleven minutes, then shakes her head. 'You folded yourself too many times,' she says. 'We can quiet the noise but we cannot undo it.' You nod. You accept the treatment. Even quieted, you hear them.

A pilot of all regions

You walked away from the tree having seen every region of the galaxy in one run. Now that every branch persists, you feel the others too — and in some of them you never left the Verge, and in some of them you died on the edge of the Rift, and in some of them you are still flying, ever outward, finding places that should not exist. The multiverse version of you is a cartographer of everything. You start writing a book. It will be impossible to finish. You keep writing anyway. It is the best thing you have ever done.

Alone, chorally

You walked away from the tree with an empty crew hold and every branch still live. The multiverse you is the loneliest of them. In no timeline did you hire anyone. In all of them you ate meals alone. You feel them all at once. You never sought people. They never sought you. And now that all the yous persist together, you are forty kinds of alone stacked on top of each other. It is fine. It has always been fine. You buy a small plant for the cockpit. You have not named it. You will not name it. It is just a plant.

A full ship, always

You walked away from the tree with a full crew hold and every branch still live. In some timelines you died and they mourned. In some they died and you mourned. In this timeline, everyone lived. They don't know about the multiverse hum — but sometimes at dinner someone laughs and you remember them laughing the same laugh in a dead branch, and you smile, and they think you're smiling at them. You are. Just also at the other them.

You who rewound, remembered by all

You walked away from the tree having rewound it ten or more times — and because the multiverse keeps every branch, it also keeps every version of YOU that chose differently at the forks you keep revisiting. They are all in your head. A council of selves. When you need to decide, you poll them. When you need comfort, the younger-you who took the bribe the first time apologizes quietly until you sleep. You are your own constituency now. Elder Sera call this condition rare. You call it home.

The weight of everything

You walked away from the tree. Every branch still exists. You can feel them now — all of them — not as memories but as live, running realities. Somewhere you died saving the child. Somewhere you took the bribe. Somewhere you never accepted the cargo run in the first place and are still flying legitimate routes, ignorant and calm. You are aware of all of them constantly.

The dreams

The first week, you cannot sleep. Every time you close your eyes you live three days of a different life. You try medication. It helps a little. The second week, a voice speaks from somewhere between your branches. It is you — a version of you that learned to manage it. 'You have to choose one to be the main one. The others can whisper but they cannot run you. You have to pick.'

The method

'You pick the one that hurts the most and is true. The one where you hurt someone and remember it. Not the escape versions. Not the wish versions. The version where you have to live with what you did.' You think about it for a long time. Then you pick.

Living with it

You live. The others whisper, forever, but they do not drown you out. Some nights you still visit them in dreams. Some mornings you wake up crying for a version of yourself that chose differently. You carry them. You do not forget them. You become the version of you who was strong enough to hold all of it.

Alternative dialogue for this scene

Variant 1

You live. Every mistake you ever made is still yours. Every death you caused is still yours. Every person you failed — they are still failed. You do not forgive yourself. You do not ask to. You become the version of you that remembers everything and still gets out of bed. Not a hero. Not an archetype. A person who knows what they did and keeps going.

Variant 2

You live. The hardest versions of you become more like ghosts — present, but dimmed. You forgive yourself for the things you did not do. This is a kinder life than you thought you'd get. You are not sure you deserve it. You take it anyway.

Dissolution

You refuse to pick. You try to be all of them at once. The voice warned you. Within a month, there is no you — just a scatter of simultaneous lives running in parallel without a center. Somewhere, in the branch where you took the bribe, a rich retired pilot suddenly forgets their own name. Somewhere, in the branch where you died, a grave keeps the only continuous version. You dissolve. Not cleanly. Not finally. But enough that what is left is no longer a person.
