The Skiff

Your last warp leaves a smear on the instruments. While you are still shaking the jump off your shoulders, a small courier-class contact cuts into your heading and matches drift without asking. Tribunal Skiff. Not a combatant. A messenger. It slows to stop against your starboard beam. A single cargo beacon detaches from the Skiff and drifts into your docking tube, carrying a sealed obsidian wafer. The Skiff is already leaving.

The Writ

The wafer speaks in a voice that you know immediately is not a recording. It is a live feed. A hooded figure resolves in the cockpit air, half his face replaced with crystalline Tribunal tech that hums quietly as he speaks. 'Pilot. I am Arbiter Vex-9. The Ledger of the Hollow now contains your name and your deeds. You have forked the Loom more times than we can ignore. I offer you a formal Writ of Stillness — a contract that promises you will not rewind for a span of ten warps. If honored, your Ledger entry is sealed. If broken, I come myself. Sign, burn, or meet me at my court in the Nameless System. Choose plainly.'

Thrown into vacuum

You cycle the airlock and feed the wafer to the stars. It does not die. The vacuum carries it three meters and it stops, mid-motion, and hangs there. Then it is gone. Not floated away — gone. You understand that the Tribunal has read your answer and that the answer is insufficient. Your HUD gains a second violet dot. Your Ledger now reads: SENTENCING DEFERRED. PROSECUTOR MOBILIZED.

Sealed, unsigned

You put the wafer in the safe next to your emergency credits. You tell yourself this is the wise choice — you have not refused, you have not accepted, you have simply delayed. The Tribunal has no way to know whether you will eventually open it. The wafer does not hum, does not glow, does not warm. Yet you notice your hands linger on the safe door longer than necessary before you lock it again.

The Oath

Your thumb touches the wafer and warmth moves through your palm — not uncomfortable, just unmistakable. The figure bows his head. 'Your signature is recorded. Ten warps of stillness. If you rewind, the Writ voids and your Ledger entry escalates. I have deposited four thousand credits into your account as a courtesy — the Tribunal pays small recognition to pilots who choose restraint over discovery. This is not kindness. This is how we keep the Loom uncrowded. Fly lightly.' The feed dies. Your safe receives a small gold token you did not put there.

Refusal

You take the wafer and press it against the fusion vent on your console. It chars in a pattern that is plainly a glyph — the Tribunal glyph for REFUSED — and the figure in your cockpit air inhales very slowly. 'So be it. You will meet my Witness before the next two warps. You will meet my Verdict before the next five. You will meet me before the year is out.' His half-crystalline face turns very slightly toward you, as if he is committing your features to memory at the hardware level. 'You are no longer a pilot to me. You are a case.' The feed dies. Your Ledger reads: TRIAL IN PROGRESS.

The appointment

He considers you for a long moment. Then something in his crystalline cheek glints — the Tribunal analogue of a smile. 'A pilot who walks willingly to court. It is not common. You understand we will still argue over your crimes. I will not grant you mercy for being brave. But I will meet you. Come to the Nameless System. Dock at the obelisk. Do not bring a fleet. Do not bring a recording device. Bring only your honesty. We begin when you arrive.' The feed dies. Your navcomputer has marked a coordinate in the Nameless System you did not enter yourself.
