01 / Cartel Voice
A father at the bar
A wide man with a kind voice and four rings per hand finds you in a Cartel cantina. He is not introducing himself because he doesn't have to. 'Pilot. My name doesn't matter. My daughter's does. Lena. Nineteen. She ran with a Black Fleet crew out of spite three months ago and stopped answering. Her last ping came from the Null Belt. I will pay thirty thousand to know if she is breathing. Forty if you bring her home. I will double that if you are quiet about it.' He slides a holo of a young woman with her father's eyes across the table. 'She is the best thing I did. I was not a good man before her.'

You push into the Null Belt — a corridor of tumbled mining drones and bone-dry fuel depots where Black Fleet crews drink their own losses. You run Lena's last ping through three dead relays before one hiccups. The hiccup is a pirate band still using the frequency as a marker. They are not hiding. They are broadcasting a name: hers. 'Lena of the Null. Tribute or tribute.' Your blood cools. This is not a ransom. This is a queen's call-sign.
You drift dark for a full station cycle and watch Lena through a borrowed lens. She is not held. She walks the deck in a coat too big for her, and when the pirates bring her a problem — a wounded man, a disputed haul, a new recruit — she solves it with a calm that makes her look older than she is. She feeds an old woman with her own hands. She has her father's eyes and none of his fear. When a pirate raises his voice at her, two others pull him aside. She is the thing that keeps them from eating each other.
You slide credits to a pirate whose hands shake. He drinks first. 'Lena. Yeah. She came in on a dare, I think. Six weeks later she was writing our rotas. Three months in, she put the last captain off an airlock for slapping a cook. We work for her now. Don't tell her I said. She's the best thing that happened to this crew. She ain't for sale back to whoever wants her.' He finishes the drink. 'Though. Between you and me. She cries when she thinks no one hears. Her father, right? Tell him she's fine. That's what she'd want you to tell him.'
You are led into a room that was a crew bunk once and has been softened with tapestries and a real chair. Lena sits in it. She is nineteen and she runs a hundred and forty pirates. She reads your face for a long second. 'He sent you.' Not a question. 'He always does. He thinks I was taken. Pilot — I took them. I came out here because I wanted to see if I was my father's child or my own. It turns out I am something neither of us have a word for. Tell me what he paid you. I will triple it if you tell him I am dead.'

You go for your sidearm. Four pirates move before you finish the motion. Lena raises one hand and they stop, weapons drawn but lowered. 'Pilot. You are going to leave this deck alive because I do not want my father to lose the last person who knew me. But you are going to leave with my answer.' She stands. 'Tell him I am dead. Anything else gets you shot in the back on your way out. You chose this when you chose violence in my court. Go.' The pirates escort you off without touching you. It is worse than being hit.

She smiles for the first time. It is her father's smile and it ages her five years instantly. 'You have surprised me. I don't like being surprised. But in your case — stay. Fly for us. You will make less than he would pay and more than he ever would. My father will find out what I have become. If he comes for me, I want someone on my side who was once on his.' She slides you a Cartel-marked blade she has broken in half. 'Give him this. He will understand.'

The wide man with four rings per hand sits quietly while you tell him his daughter is dead. He does not cry. He does not ask for proof. He thanks you. He pays the agreed sum and a little extra you did not ask for. Later that night you learn he walked into the sea off his estate. He did not come out. Lena will get the news in a week. She will not cry either. She will pour his favorite drink into the void and keep building her court.

09 / Cartel Voice
A father's silence
He listens without interrupting, which is the hardest thing you have ever watched a man do. When you are done, he stares at the holo of his daughter for a long time. Then, quietly: 'She was always going to leave me. I just wanted to be the one who let her go.' He pays you in full and asks for one more favor. 'Take her this message, the next time you see her. Tell her she is a better captain than I was a father, and that I am not coming. Not to retrieve her. Not to hurt her. Tell her I am proud.' You agree. You do not know if you will ever see her again, but the message burns in your pocket.

10 / Narration
A court of her own
You return to the father because you owe him a call. You deliver nothing — only the broken blade. He holds it a moment and does not ask what it means. He already knows. 'Thank you, pilot,' he says, and closes the door. You fly out of Cartel space, toward a different kind of work now, and the Null Belt blinks on your chart like a home you did not know you had.
