01 / Guardian Initiate

A broken map

A young Guardian finds you at a refueling station. Her threading is uneven — she is anxious. 'Pilot. A sanctuary has gone missing. Not destroyed. Not abandoned. Removed from every map, every memory, every timeline record. We cannot find it and we cannot remember where it was. We think you can, because you exist slightly outside the Guardian signal. Will you help us?' She hands you a single coordinate fragment on a piece of bone.

02 / Narration

The place that isn't

You follow the fragment to a spot in empty space. There is nothing here. The instruments read normal space. But when you close your eyes, you feel a building. When you open them, nothing. You realize the sanctuary is not gone — it is hidden behind a kind of consensus blindness. Every mind refuses to see it. Including yours.

The sanctuary returns

You sit in your pilot seat with your eyes closed for an hour. Two. Three. When you finally open them — a building. Vast. Guardian architecture. Floating in the void. It was always there. It is ashamed of being there. Inside, the Guardians are still living. They do not know they were hidden. They welcome you as if nothing was wrong.

Readings

You run the scan without looking at the results directly — printing them to a pad you flip face-down on your console. When you read the pad minutes later, the output describes a structure massing 400,000 tons, invisible to line-of-sight observation, consistent with standard Guardian sanctum architecture. But the scan also shows something else: a second mass inside, of unknown composition, that appears to be bleeding timeline weight. This is what's hiding them.

Board the sanctuary anyway

05 / Guardian Elder

The elder

An old Guardian greets you. Her threading is ancient — most of it has darkened from age. 'Pilot. You should not be here. None should. We chose to fade. The artifact in our vault was becoming unstable. The only way to contain it was to become uncontained ourselves — to slip between what is remembered. We are fine. But we are also gone. Can you understand?'

Alternative dialogue for this scene

Variant 1

An old Guardian greets you. Her threading is ancient — most of it has darkened from age. She looks at your scanner-reading printout with sad recognition. 'So you know already. Yes. The artifact in our vault was becoming unstable. We chose to fade to contain it. We are fine. But we are also gone. You are the first to see us since we stepped sideways. What do you want?'

06 / Narration

The vault

She leads you to a sealed chamber. Inside, something that looks like liquid light is held in a glass sphere. It pulses in rhythms that should not exist. The elder is calm. 'A splinter of the Starforge from a timeline we pruned ourselves. We did not know what it was when we kept it. It has been trying to finish the job of closing the Rift — but wrong. It would close you and me inside it.'

Take the splinter with you (dangerous)

Restoration

She considers you for a long moment. 'To return us, you would have to give something of yourself to anchor us back. A memory we could weave into. We would keep it. You would not. Are you sure?' You think about what you would give. The memory of your mother's face? Your first flight? The warmth of that one summer when you were seventeen? You pick.

Return

You return to Guardian territory. The young initiate who gave you the bone fragment meets you at the dock. She knows, somehow, what happened. She bows deeply. 'The sanctuary is on the maps again. Thank you, pilot. The elders will not forget this. Whether you remember it is another matter.' She gives you a weaver's gift — a small woven bracelet that shifts colors when you look at it sideways.
