If those functions are not specified before production, generated or sourced audio may sound individually plausible while competing with the interface, arriving too late, or communicating the wrong emotional reading. A concise brief gives a human, an AI tool, or an audio implementer the same target to evaluate.

A useful audio specification connects cue purpose, cue hierarchy, and tonal consistency.

Cue purpose

State what the player should perceive or decide because of the cue. Useful purposes include:

  • Confirmation: the intended action was accepted.
  • Warning: a relevant threat or failure is approaching.
  • State change: the game has entered a different condition.
  • Attention direction: the player should notice a location, object, or event.
  • Character or world expression: voice or sound communicates identity, context, or mood.
  • Progress or reward: the player has reached a meaningful threshold.

A cue can have more than one effect, but one primary purpose should be named. If every cue is described as “immersive,” the specification does not tell production what the cue must accomplish.

Cue hierarchy

Not every sound deserves equal attention. Define which cues must win when several events happen together. A practical hierarchy is:

  1. Critical player information: immediate danger, irreversible failure, or a required response.
  2. Action and state confirmation: interaction results, equipment changes, or progression events.
  3. Context and navigation: environmental texture, location identity, or directional support.
  4. Atmosphere: tone and continuity that should not compete with information.

Hierarchy affects loudness, frequency space, duration, repetition rules, ducking, and whether a cue can be safely omitted under pressure. It is a design decision, not only a mixing decision.

Consistency

A cue belongs to a family. Related events should share a recognizable logic in timbre, rhythm, vocal treatment, intensity, or spatial behavior. Consistency does not mean every sound is identical. It means the player can form a reliable interpretation: for example, a family of short, dry confirmation sounds may indicate accepted interactions, while a different sustained texture marks an unresolved threat.

Use the Purpose → Priority → Timing → Tone model for every cue.

For critical player information, name an appropriate non-audio equivalent or reinforcement, such as a visual or haptic signal. For voice that carries meaningful content, identify whether subtitles or a transcript are required.

Consider a bounded moment in which the player attempts to open a sealed passage while an alert state is active.

Audio language: Compact, restrained, industrial, and low-melodic. Critical information should be clear without turning the moment into a dramatic musical sting.

Mix principle: The alert remains the dominant threat signal. The interaction response confirms the attempt but must not disguise the continuing alert.

The example specifies function before sound texture. A generator could produce several versions of SLP-01, but the cue sheet remains the authority for selecting and evaluating them.

AI can help expand, compare, or critique a specification, but it should not replace the design decision.

  1. Write the purpose, priority, timing, content type, and tone for each cue without assistance.
  2. Ask an AI tool to identify ambiguities, duplicated functions, missing interruption rules, or conflicts in the hierarchy. Provide the bounded moment and your draft; do not ask it to invent an entire audio direction without constraints.
  3. Compare the critique against the game moment. Reject suggestions that add information the player does not need or that conflict with the established audio language.
  4. Produce a revised brief and cue sheet with explicit acceptance criteria.
  5. If audio candidates are later generated, evaluate them against the cue sheet rather than against novelty or polish alone.

The common mistake is specifying audio with adjectives instead of functions: “make it tense, cinematic, punchy, and immersive.” Adjectives can guide tone, but they do not establish what the player must perceive, when the cue must arrive, or which cue wins during overlap. Another frequent error is treating voice as a substitute for feedback. If a spoken line is required for the player to understand a basic state, the nonverbal cue system may be incomplete.

Create a brief and cue sheet for one bounded moment from a game you are designing or studying. Choose one moment with no more than four essential audio cues, such as:

  • accepting or rejecting an interaction;
  • entering a danger state;
  • completing a short objective; or
  • receiving a temporary ability or resource.

Complete the following steps:

  1. Write a two- or three-sentence audio brief describing the player-facing goal and the intended audio language.
  2. List up to four cues using the fields cue ID, trigger, primary purpose, priority, timing, content type, tone, accessibility or fallback, and acceptance criterion. For content type, identify whether the cue is, for example, a sound effect, voice line, musical element, ambience, or another deliberate audio category.
  3. Mark which cue is allowed to interrupt another and which cue must remain audible during overlap. For every cue carrying critical player information, specify a non-audio equivalent or reinforcement. For every voice cue carrying meaningful content, state whether subtitles or a transcript are required.
  4. Remove any cue whose only justification is atmosphere or polish. If atmosphere is important, state what tone or continuity it supports.
  5. Review the sheet for consistency: related cues should be recognizable as a family, while different purposes should not be confused.

The key decision is not which sound is most impressive. It is which information must reach the player first in the chosen moment.

Submit the one-page audio brief and cue sheet for a single bounded moment as a practical checkpoint, or exchange it with a peer for review. Score each criterion as met or not yet met and revise every item marked not yet met:

  • every cue has one named primary purpose;

  • every cue has a deliberate content type appropriate to its player-facing job;
