This lesson treats level design as the arrangement of opportunities, constraints, readable risks, and evidence in space. The target capability is to annotate what a simple space teaches.

After this lesson, you can annotate a simple room by identifying what its layout teaches, what action it invites, one spatially readable risk, and what evidence confirms or corrects the player's interpretation.
324. Why this matters
A player reads a room before reading an explanation. Distance, visibility, openings, obstacles, hazards, and focal points can suggest where to go and what to try. A risk that cannot be perceived before commitment feels arbitrary rather than instructive. Spatial analysis helps you design interactions in which the player can form a reasonable hypothesis, recognize danger, and revise that hypothesis when necessary.
325. Prior knowledge
You should have completed the earlier Stage 1 lessons on the 1.1 loop, 1.3 rules, and 1.5 camera intent and readability, as well as the previous lesson, 1.6 L3 — UI that the mode cannot use. In particular, you should be able to describe the ACT → RESPOND → CHANGE → AGAIN loop from 1.1, identify the rules that govern an interaction from 1.3, and evaluate whether camera placement and framing make important actions readable from 1.5. You should also be able to identify when a mode's available interaction path conflicts with the interface it presents.
No engine-specific level-editing skill is required. If you inspect an AI-generated layout, treat it as a proposal rather than evidence that the room teaches clearly. Mark the intended focus, invitation, constraint, risk cue, change, and recovery directly on the layout or in an equivalent text description. Note any relationship that is ambiguous or missing, and judge the arrangement by what a player could infer from the space.

Space is pedagogy.
A room teaches through the relationship between what the player can perceive, what the player can reach, what may go wrong, and what changes after an action. A space does not need text to communicate a lesson. Its structure can establish a sequence such as:
- Notice a relevant object, route, or risk.
- Approach or inspect it.
- Attempt an action with an informed expectation.
- Observe a change that makes the rule or consequence more legible.
A spatially readable risk has three parts: a visible or otherwise perceivable cue before commitment, a consequence that follows the risky action, and a route or observation point that lets the player revise the next attempt. The designer's responsibility is not to remove all danger or make every route obvious. It is to make the intended lesson recoverable rather than arbitrary.

For a risk to teach rather than punish arbitrarily, check this chain:
CUE → COMMITMENT → CONSEQUENCE → REVISED ATTEMPT
The cue must be perceivable before the player commits. The consequence must clarify what the risk meant. The room must support a revised attempt, such as approaching from another angle or choosing a safer route.
Then test the whole room with the Stage 1 loop:
ACT → RESPOND → CHANGE → AGAIN
The player acts on a spatial hypothesis. The game responds. The room changes, or makes the absence of change legible. The player tries again with a better or revised interpretation. Use the Spanish sequence when working in Spanish: ACTUAR → RESPONDER → CAMBIAR → OTRA VEZ.
328. Concrete example
Imagine a small room containing a closed door and a bright switch beside it. A low barrier narrows the direct approach to the switch into a short passage. A dark hazard strip crosses that passage, and its warning pattern is visible from the entrance. A separate side route goes around the barrier, remains safe, and is wide enough for the player to retreat.
- The bright switch is the focus.
- The safe side route is an invitation to inspect the room instead of taking the shortest approach automatically.
- The low barrier is a constraint because it divides the approach into a narrow hazardous passage and a longer safe route.
- The visible hazard strip is a spatially readable risk: the direct passage remains traversable, but its danger can be perceived before entry.
- The door opening is the change that confirms the switch's purpose.
- The side route and the visible return to the entrance provide recovery if the player tests the hazard or misreads the approaches.
The room's lesson is not merely “press the switch.” It teaches: “When the shortest approach contains a visible danger, inspect the surrounding space for a safer route to the control; activating that control changes access.” If the hazard is hidden around a corner, has no perceivable cue, or leaves no route for a revised attempt, the same consequence would feel arbitrary rather than spatially instructive.
329. Common mistake
A common mistake is to annotate objects instead of lessons, or to treat an unseen danger as a valid challenge. “There is a door, a switch, a barrier, and a hazard” is an inventory, not a level-design analysis. The useful question is what sequence of attention, movement, risk recognition, and action those relationships create. A room can contain all the expected elements and still teach nothing if the important relationship is hidden, ambiguous, or unsupported by a perceivable change and a recoverable alternative.
330. Guided practice
Represent a simple room in one of these equivalent formats:
- a top-down paper sketch using simple shapes and arrows;
- a digital diagram made with drawing, diagramming, or assistive-input tools; or
- a structured text map with numbered locations and explicit connections.
Do not build the room in an engine. Whichever format you choose, include one destination, one interactive object, one constraint, one readable risk, and one recoverable route.
For a structured text map, you may use this pattern:
- Entrance: what can be perceived from the starting position.
- Focus: the first object, destination, or route intended to receive attention.
- Connection: how the entrance connects to the focus.
- Constraint: what narrows, blocks, or redirects an approach.
- Risk: the cue, where it can be perceived, and which connection becomes dangerous after commitment.
- Safe or recoverable connection: how the player can avoid the risk or reorient after testing it.
- Change: what becomes different after the interaction.
Annotate the artifact with six labels:
- Focus: what should be noticed first?
- Invitation: what action should the player try?
- Constraint: what limits or redirects that action?
- Risk: what perceivable cue warns the player before commitment, and what could happen if the player proceeds?
- Change: what perceivable result confirms the action or consequence?
- Recovery: where can the player look, move, or return to revise the interpretation?
If you submit a visual artifact, include brief text descriptions of its important cues and connections. You may create the artifact through handwriting, typing, speech input, adapted controls, or another assistive method.
Make one deliberate design decision: choose whether the interactive object or the destination receives the strongest emphasis. State why that emphasis produces the intended first hypothesis without hiding the risk cue. Then write one sentence describing the room's lesson.
Trace the risk chain:
CUE → COMMITMENT → CONSEQUENCE → REVISED ATTEMPT
For each part, identify one concrete event, location, or connection from your artifact. Then trace the Stage 1 loop:
ACT → RESPOND → CHANGE → AGAIN
For each word, identify one concrete event. If the risk cannot be perceived before commitment, or if the player has no meaningful way to revise the attempt, change the arrangement rather than adding instructional text.
331. Validation / evidence
Your evidence is the annotated room representation, the risk-chain trace, and the four-step loop trace. A visual diagram and a structured text map are equally valid when they communicate the required relationships.
The work passes when its annotations answer all of the following:
- What should the player notice first?
- What action does the room invite?
- What prevents or redirects a competing action?
- What cue makes one risk readable before commitment?
- From where can that cue be perceived?
- What consequence communicates that the risk mattered?
- Where can the player recover or choose a revised attempt without restarting the lesson?
- What change confirms the intended interpretation?
If another reader is available, ask them to identify the risk cue before describing the consequence. They may point to it in a diagram or name its number and connection in a text map. If they can list the elements but cannot locate the warning, predict the consequence, or identify a revised route, revise the arrangement.
If another reader is not available, use this solo validation checklist:
- Hide or set aside your one-sentence statement of the room's lesson.
- Begin only from the entrance description and follow the represented connections in order.
- Identify the first focus and the invited action from the artifact alone.
- Confirm that the risk cue appears before the connection or action that commits the player.
- Confirm that the consequence and the recovery route are distinct and explicitly described.
- Re-read your lesson statement and revise any relationship that the artifact did not independently support.
If the artifact suggests a different first action from the one you intended, either accept that action as the room's lesson or change the emphasis while keeping the risk cue perceivable.
