01 / Lyra
Lyra Hears the Signal
Keros hangs ahead, a bruised mining world under a restless star. The cockpit is quiet until Lyra grips the back of the pilot seat.
Lyra:
"Do you hear that?"
"A song. No, not a song. A warning."
Kaela filters the static into a hard, narrow waveform.
Kaela:
"Confirmed. Nonlocal transmission riding under the stellar noise. It is aimed at Lyra, which means it is also aimed at us."
The array is old, cold, and almost dead. Its dishes are aimed at empty space, but one signal still repeats through the static.
Kaela isolates the ghost transmission and pins it to the nav display.
Kaela:
"Signal age is impossible. It was sent before we arrived and after we answered. I recommend listening anyway."
Signal:
"Verge fell. If the child survived, bring her to the glass sanctuary. Do not trust the Fleet. Do not trust the Tribunal. Do not trust me too quickly."
Restore the signal.
The array wakes. A woman's face appears in broken blue light.
She looks exhausted, like she has been waiting years for this call.
Vex:
"You made it out."
"Vex. And in seventeen timelines, I watched you die at Verge."
Vex leans closer to the transmission.
Vex:
"The Black Fleet does not want to kill Lyra. They want to use her. If they reach the Rift with her alive, they can tear it open wide enough to swallow the Core."
Lyra:
"I did not do this."
Vex:
"No. But they will make you carry the blame."
Survive incoming Black Fleet scouts.
Black Fleet scouts drop from silent jump, weapons armed. They tracked the array activation.
Vex:
"Move. They followed the signal."
The array is destroyed, but Vex sent coordinates before the signal died. Lyra now knows the enemy wants her alive.

The ship docks under a false ID. For the first time since Verge, the engines cool down.
Lyra sits on an ammo crate with a ration pack in both hands.
Lyra:
"Is this where you leave me?"
"People say that before they leave."
"I only know pieces."
The scanner catches a pulse from Lyra's broken collar. It is weak, but not dead.
Kaela:
"Active tracking burst detected. Collar housing is cracked; transmitter core is not. Someone is using Lyra's heartbeat as a beacon."
Lyra:
"I thought it was broken."
Kaela:
"Broken things can still betray you. I can guide the cut, but you have to make it."
Disable the tracker.
The station lights flicker. Outside, three Black Fleet hunters come out of jump, too close and too fast.
Commander Varek:
"You keep running as if distance matters."
Launch immediately.
The ship tears free of the dock while station traffic scatters. Missiles streak through civilian lanes. A tanker explodes behind you and turns the corridor white.
Vex:
"I am sending you a narrow route. Do not slow down. Do not look back."
Lyra:
"Those ships are here because of me."
The ship drops out of jump near a dark region of space. No station lights. No trade lanes. No patrol chatter.
Only an old beacon, barely alive.
Vex:
"The Guardians hid her once. They failed. Now we find out if they can still help us."
Kaela:
"Tracker is dead. Enemy pursuit has degraded, not ended. I am keeping a shadow map of every vector they try."
You removed the tracker and survived the first hunt. Lyra is still afraid, but she is beginning to trust you.
